Melissa Alipalo

MFA student
Springvale, Maine
Melissa Alipalo brings her background in journalism, anthropology, and international development to her creative writing. She has worked in more than 15 countries in Asia and spent most of her adult life living in Manila, Philippines. She earned a master’s degree in social development from Ateneo de Manila University and is currently a student of the Stonecoast MFA program. Since 2017, she has been making her home and building a literary life in Maine while continuing her work in international development. While poetry is her daily medium, Alipalo also has a novel in progress and an ongoing independent documentary project on a remote, climate-threatened Himalayan village in Nepal. She has worked in print, tv, and film. For Alipalo, writing poetry feels like a constant negotiation between the sacred and the profane, duty and love, home and away, present and absent.
