Poetry has often been voice for the hidden, even the forbidden in my life. My first poem when I was 10 or 11 had the title, "In the shadows of the mind." It expressed the child abuse I was experience but could think openly about because such thoughts were too dangerous. I still find poetry evokes emotions hard to encounter in any other context. Of course, now there is much more to my poetry experience than dark feelings. There is the joy of comradeship with nature in Mary Oliver, the deep reflections on human life in Rilke, the gritty experiences of love in Neruda; and so much more. Talk to me about real things, take a risk.
